The Impact of Letter Grades on Student Course Selection and Major Choice: Evidence from a Regression-Discontinuity Design
نویسندگان
چکیده
This research examines the effect of undergraduate course letter grades on future course selection and major choice. Using a Regression-Discontinuity design, we exploit the fact that the probability of earning a particular letter grade jumps discontinuously around letter grade cutoffs. This variation in letter grades allows us to isolate the impact of letter grades on major choice and course selection. We collect original numerical scores for 65 introductory courses across 6 fields and merge this with administrative data including student-level characteristics and transcripts. Since grading cutoffs exist throughout the distribution of scores, we are able to estimate local treatment effects at a variety of localities to examine the distribution of treatment effects. Contrary to the findings of the previous literature, we find no evidence that students respond to their letter grades in terms of course or major choices. ∗Visiting Assistant Professor, School of Engineering Education, Purdue University †Assistant Professor of Economics, University of Illinois at Chicago

Examining the Influence of Engineering Students’ Course Grades on Major Choice and Major Switching Behavior*
The need for science and engineering workers has raised concerns regarding the persistence of undergraduate students in engineering. Since academic institutions ordinarily provide studentswith feedback on course performance through grades, understanding the role of course grades in influencing student major choice and major switching behavior is critical. This research identifies factors associ...
متن کاملDesigning an expert system to advise the IT students' Master's degree for course selection
In the university educational system, students, depending on their different conditions, need guidance to choose the best courses and the best curriculum during a semester. Lack of sufficient information about class hours, exam interactions, prerequisites for each course, variety of instructors and other conditions may lead to a wrong choice and confusion of students. In this research, an exper...
متن کاملIncreased Course Structure Improves Performance in Introductory Biology
We tested the hypothesis that highly structured course designs, which implement reading quizzes and/or extensive in-class active-learning activities and weekly practice exams, can lower failure rates in an introductory biology course for majors, compared with low-structure course designs that are based on lecturing and a few high-risk assessments. We controlled for 1) instructor effects by anal...
متن کاملRethinking exams and letter grades: how much can teachers delegate to students?
In this article we report a 3-yr study of a large-enrollment Cell Biology course focused on developing student skill in scientific reasoning and data interpretation. Specifically, the study tested the hypothesis that converting the role of exams from summative grading devices to formative tools would increase student success in acquiring those skills. Traditional midterm examinations were repla...
متن کاملDeveloping a Course Recommender by Combining Clustering and Fuzzy Association Rules
Each semester, students go through the process of selecting appropriate courses. It is difficult to find information about each course and ultimately make decisions. The objective of this paper is to design a course recommender model which takes student characteristics into account to recommend appropriate courses. The model uses clustering to identify students with similar interests and skills...
